Bostini Cream Pies

September 28, 2011

I have lived in the Midwest for almost 20 years, but I am an out-of-her-element Bostonian.  In my lifelong search for the perfect Boston Cream Pie, I ran across a posting for a dessert called “Bostini Cream Pies.”  That, of course, more than caught my interest.

Peanut Butter Brownies

September 26, 2011

Boy, am I ever late posting this!  Before my peanut-butter-loving friend and co-worker, Jo, left for a one-year work assignment in Switzerland at the beginning of August, I tried a bunch of peanut butter dessert recipes trying to find the right one for her going away coffee hour.  I did post the peanut swirl brownies, [...]

Sweet Potato Bisque

September 25, 2011

Friday was the first official day of autumn, the days are cooler, and thoughts turn to all things Fall—football, homecoming dances, pumpkins, apples, soups, and hearty stews.  I am a year-round soup lover, and it’s the rare week I don’t make a big pot.  Sara is home from college for the weekend, so I decided [...]

SSC Brownies

September 23, 2011

I am hard pressed to remember if I have ever eaten a bowl of Rice Krispies in my life.  (I don’t believe I have.)  Yet I always seem to have a box of them in my kitchen cabinet.  Usually, I have purchased the cereal for one recipe or another (no, not for Rice Krispie bars—ugh.  [...]

Crostini with Sun-Dried Tomato Jam

September 21, 2011

Pot luck?  Sign me up!  I have, of course, an ulterior motive.  Whenever there’s a pot luck, I am there to scope out the table and search for a take-away recipe.  It is the rare pot luck that I don’t come home with a new recipe.  I taste and sample until I find the dish [...]

Swan Cream Puffs

September 19, 2011

I love special desserts for special occasions, and this recipe certainly fits the bill.  It was love at first sight of these swan cream puffs in a long-ago issue of Good Housekeeping magazine.  They subsequently included the recipe in the 1991 edition of their Good Housekeeping Illustrated Book of Desserts. I bought that book for [...]

Blondies

September 17, 2011

In the space of two weeks, my son John got a new job (first permanent after college—yippee!), a new car, and a new apartment (one where he pays the rent!).  Roger and I helped him move into his apartment last weekend.  That included getting him a platform bed at IKEA and spending an inordinately long [...]

Dad’s Egg McMuffin

September 16, 2011

Guest Post by Roger Cooking breakfasts at home has been my duty for as long as I can remember.  When my girls were on the high school swim team, practice started at 5:00 am and ended at 6:45 am, with class starting at 7:10 am.  So they had 25 minutes (most times, less) to shower, [...]

Steak Chili

September 15, 2011

Guest Post by Roger I love chili.  I love hot chili.  I have had so many types of chili over the years, that I thought I had tried them all.  When Fran discovered this award-winning steak chili, I read it with great interest.  From the first read, I knew it would be different, and good.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

September 13, 2011

Chicken tortilla soup ranks right near the top of my favorite soups.  If a restaurant has it on the menu, I have to, at minimum, order a cup of it.  When the On The Border chain opened a restaurant in St. Charles and I tried a bowl of their offering, I knew I had found [...]
