I’ve been told that many people eagerly await the seasonal McDonald’s Shamrock Shake menu offering. That group has never included me.
Believe it or not, I’ve never even had a McDonald’s Shamrock Shake. Since I am not a fast food fan, I rarely set foot in a McDonald’s–but I am aware of the treat. Not so with other non-hamburger items on their menu. I can remember years ago when my children were quite young, they were invited to a party and there were Chicken McNuggets served. Neither I nor my kids had ever had them. I actually had to ask the hostess exactly what they were. That was good for a laugh since at the time I had 2-year old twin girls and a 3-year-old boy. Let’s just say we didn’t get out much.
Back to the Shamrock Shake, I thought I’d try my hand at a very easy copycat recipe. You can throw it together in about five minutes. Not counting the optional whipped cream, there are only four ingredients—vanilla ice cream, milk, peppermint extract, and green food coloring. Since I’m not a fan of food coloring, I made my shake a very light shade of green. I’ve seen photos of the McD’s version and it looks like it’s got very bright green stripes. No thank you. Their version also has—count ’em—50 different ingredients! I won’t even get into the calories. Hey, it’s not diet food.
Since I’ve never actually consumed the version sold by McD’s, I cannot say with absolute certainty that it is a true copycat recipe. What I can tell you is that it is absolutely delicious! So, if you are someone who counts the days until Shamrock Shakes are on the menu at McDonald’s each year, you’ll never have to wait again.

McDonald’s Copycat Shamrock Shake
Makes 2 shakes
- 3 cups of your favorite vanilla ice cream
- 1 1/2 cups milk (whole, 2% or skim all work)
- 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract
- Green food coloring (enough to get the shade of green you want – I used 5 drops of gel coloring)
- Fresh whipped cream and/or sprinkles for topping, optional
Combine all ingredients in a blender until smooth and blended. Divide between two glasses, top with whipped cream if using.
I have no idea how thick the original Shamrock Shake is. If you like yours thicker, then I would add more ice cream until you get the thickness you prefer.
